It strikes me that despite it's size, power, finances and technological advancement Russia is still a very "old skool" country with very old values and attitudes. While many other European countries have evolved with the world and don't look to expand their land ownership or show their "might" with unprovoked acts of terror or aggression, Russia is very much still stuck in cold war attitudes. Trying to flex their muscles very publicly and still using last century propaganda and lying techniques - for example, publicly laughing at the western nations' suggestions that Russia intended to launch attacks in Ukraine and that they were just carrying out a military exercise, when all intelligence suggested otherwise.
It's such a strange, archaic attitude to the world.
So why then does Russia still feel their position as most powerful country on the planet is so threatened that it's time for a show of force. Why does Putin need to follow up with statements like "...any nation that attempts to intervene will be responded to immediately with force of a magnitude never before seen in history"?
This is World War territory now. Other nations cannot reasonably stand by and let Putin do as he wishes, because he won't stop. This will be another "Hitler" style attempt to occupy multiple countries and try to take over the planet. So intervention from other nations is inevitable and if he keeps true to his promise, any intervening nation will make themselves a target. This cannot have a goopd outcome.
As if we don't have enough trouble and upset in the world, why does he need to bring it to our doorstep now? The world is still reeling, still recovering from a two year long covid19 pandemic, we don't now need to see war in Europe with the real potential for it become a World War. Europe has always prided itself on the lack of war with the EU Bloc since it was first formed (thought: could this also develop into a way of blaming and persecuting Brexit by the rest of Europe? ), so we should just leave the inter-country fighting to the middle eastern countries. We don't need to be giving the middle eastern terrorist cells a helping hand.
Putin is a silly, silly man and has simply not though through the consequences of his actions - dark days ahead for everyone I fear
